NPC Webinar: Can We Bring Clarity, Consistency and Transparency to Payer Coverage Decisions?

Why are some treatments covered under a health care plan, while other treatments are not? How do payers evaluate the information needed to make coverage decisions?

There is a bit of a "black box" around the formulary decision-making process. As a result, decisions about treatment access are often unpredictable to patients, providers and biopharmaceutical manufacturers.

There is a bit of a "black box" around the formulary decision-making process. As a result, decisions about treatment access are often unpredictable to patients, providers and biopharmaceutical manufacturers.

On September 10 at 1 p.m. ET, the National Pharmaceutical Council (NPC) is hosting a webinar to discuss this issue and approaches to increasing the clarity, consistency and transparency of formulary decision-making.

Speakers will include:

  • Dr. Jennifer Graff, Director, Comparative Effectiveness Research, National Pharmaceutical Council
  • Dr. Saira Jan, Director of Clinical Pharmacy Management, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey; Clinical Professor, Rutgers State University of New Jersey
  • Dr. Bonnie Dean, Principal Investigator, Research Services, Cerner Research

The panel will discuss a research effort by NPC, Cerner Research and the University of Pennsylvania to develop and test an approach for creating more structure within formulary decision-making. They will share what was learned and future directions for improving the transparency of the process. Their findings are detailed in the August edition of the peer-reviewed journal Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T).
