The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute Methodology Committee: Resource Guide

In March 2010, President Obama signed into law the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, broad health reform legislation that established the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). Since that time, a number of important steps have been taken to implement PCORI, starting with the September 2010 appointment of a Board of Governors and continuing with the January 2011 announcement of the members of the Methodology Committee. Among its many responsibilities, the PCORI Board of Governors is tasked with setting the research agenda, while the Methodology Committee members are tasked with the development of sound research methods and will have a large role in the type of research that is undertaken to answer specific research questions. To provide a better understanding of this new committee and its role, the National Pharmaceutical Council has developed the PCORI Methodology Committee Resource Guide, which is a companion booklet to the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute Resource Guide. This resource guide will assist you in understanding the most common types of comparative effectiveness research; introduce you to the members of the Methodology Committee; and offer a variety of resources for additional information.
