Mark your calendars for October 16 from 2 pm-3pm ET and plan to participate in a special webinar about the role of pharmaceuticals in the accountable care organization (ACO) environment.

To support the delivery of value-based care, the National Pharmaceutical Council (NPC), the American Medical Group Association (AMGA) and Premier healthcare alliance teamed with seven provider organizations to form the Working Group on Optimizing Medication Therapy in Value-Based Healthcare. The group developed a framework for considering the role of pharmaceuticals in achieving value-based success and published an article as a web exclusive in the July 2012 issue of the American Journal of Managed Care.

Speakers for the webinar include Robert Dubois, MD, PhD, chief science officer, National Pharmaceutical Council, Gary Plank, PharmD, corporate director of pharmacy services, Marshfield Clinic, Gregory Kotzbauer, project manager, health policy and ACO demonstrations, Dartmouth Institute and Jerry Penso, MD MBA, chief medical and quality officer, American Medical Group Association. Marv Feldman, MS RPh, senior director for medication management, Premier healthcare alliance, and Scott Pope, PharmD, national director Premier Research Services, Premier healthcare alliance, will moderate the discussion.

This panel will discuss how medications play a critical role in a value-based environment such as an ACO. When managed optimally, drug therapy can simultaneously improve clinical outcomes for patients, reduce overall costs of care, and help an ACO achieve quality benchmarks. The faculty will present a recently developed framework and how it can be applied to your organization. They also describe the role of pharmacists in participating on teams to ensure the most appropriate use of medications in the ambulatory patient population.

In addition, the faculty will present on this topic at the National Accountable Care Organization Congress on Wednesday, October 31.
