Webinar: 2016 Comparative Effectiveness Research and the Environment for Health Care Decision-Making

This one-hour webinar highlights the results of NPC's annual survey of comparative effectiveness research (CER) stakeholders and includes a panel discussion about the current environment for health care decision-making.

Dan Leonard, MA, president, National Pharmaceutical Council (NPC), moderated the webinar and kicked off the conversation by noting that NPC began tracking stakeholders’ perceptions of CER more than six years ago, when the Affordable Care Act was signed into law, and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) was beginning to form. He also introduced the webinar speakers, who included:

• Kimberly Westrich, MA, vice president, health services research, NPC, who provided an overview of the 2016 survey results, highlighted the key takeaways, including that CER is still important, but its impact remains a horizon issue;
• Joe Selby, MD, MPH, executive director, PCORI, who reacted to the results from the survey, emphasized the finding that patients should have a role in research prioritization, but stressed that clinician specialty organizations also should be included in this area and others; and
• Lisa Simpson, MB, BCh, MPH, FAAP, president and CEO, AcademyHealth, who also served as a reactor panelist, commented that innovative delivery systems are also an important player in conducting CER, and that AcademyHealth is working with academia to improve translation and dissemination practices to increase CER's impact.
