NPC’s Westrich @ DIA 50th Annual Meeting: Exploring the CER Environment

The National Pharmaceutical Council’s (NPC) fourth annual health care stakeholder survey, which sheds light on the current environment for comparative effectiveness research (CER) and health care decision-making, is continuing to generate attention.

The National Pharmaceutical Council’s (NPC) fourth annual health care stakeholder survey, which sheds light on the current environment for comparative effectiveness research (CER) and health care decision-making, is continuing to generate attention.

For the third year in a row, NPC Director of Health Services Research Kimberly Westrich will present the findings and key insights from the 2014 survey at the Drug Information Association’s Annual Meeting. She will chair the session, “Using Comparative Effectiveness Research to Make Health Care Decisions: Exploring the Environment, Opportunities, and Challenges Through Real-World Examples,” on Tuesday, June 17 at 8 am PT at San Diego’s Convention Center (Room 9).

This session will illustrate how stakeholders gauge CER’s importance, and perceive its current and future impact. Ms. Westrich also will speak about which agencies or groups are considered most influential in developing, conducting and disseminating research.

She will be joined by Dr. Nancy A. Dreyer, global chief of scientific affairs & senior vice president, Quintiles Outcome, who will examine processes for evaluating when CER is sufficient for making decisions by utilizing the GRACE Checklist in her presentation, “Recognizing Non-Interventional Research Good Enough for Purpose.” The checklist contains 11 items about data and research methods that can be used as an initial screening tool to separate observational studies that meet baseline quality criteria from those that do not.

Dr. Brian Mittman, senior scientist, Department of Research & Evaluation, Kaiser Permanente, and senior advisor, Veterans Administration Center for Implementation Practice and Research Support, also will participate in the session. Dr. Mittman will address additional factors influencing the likelihood of CER implementation and impact in his presentation, “CER Dissemination, Implementation and Impact: Challenges and Strategies in Integrated Delivery Systems.”

If you aren’t able to attend in-person, be sure to check out the related materials on NPC’s website. These include our CER survey booklet, infographic and archived webinar; the GRACE checklist infographic and description; and additional articles and research on CER.
